So, what is Search Engine Marketing?
There are two types of search engine marketing: Search Engine Marketing (SEM) or Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
They’re kind of the same thing.
- Search Engine Marketing (SEM) is the approach that uses paid methods like Google Ads, formerly (Google Adwords) to appear in search results.
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is the approach that uses organic methods to appear in search results.
Derek discusses Search Engine Optimization (SEO). This search engine marketing strategy often takes months, especially if it’s a brand new site, to see real results but after time it’s well worth the work you put into it because traffic becomes free.
But why is SEO something that so many people attempt but then fail miserably at?
Derek explains that it’s because, typically, people are focused on one or two or three of the five pillars.
He’s going to go through these five pillars of a successful search engine marketing campaign in this video and at the end, you’re going to understand all of the components that you need to have in place on your website in your search engine marketing strategy.

The foundation of any good SEO strategy begins with keyword research. You want to pick the right keywords on your topic that you’re going to focus on. There are also multiple related keywords that you automatically begin to rank for. These are called semantically related keywords.
Once you have figured out the top keyword topics that you want to rank for, you can move on to the next pillar.
2. Authority Content
Now, take that keyword or keywords and topics and create cornerstone content or authority content. When creating your content you want to go in-depth around 1000 or more words. But not just words for the sake of words, words that are meaningful that offer huge value.
3. On-Site Optimization
Once you have chosen your keywords and created great content, it’s not enough to just throw it up on your blog post and hope Google finds it. need to optimize your website and have the basic stuff like our title tags and our description tags. And then including the keywords and then the semantically related keywords throughout our authority content.
4. Page Experience
When people go to your web page, does it load really quickly? Is it easy to navigate? Is there weird stuff that’s misleading? If you use the Google Search Console (aka. Webmaster Tools) you can find out how Google sees your website in terms of search engine optimization and stuff like that.
Once we’ve completed the first four steps, the last step, and the most important step, hands down, is building high-quality backlinks that are getting other people in the industry to link to you. When you are first starting out getting quality backlinks is hard but as long as you have good informative content, other websites will eventually link to you.
